Hard of hearing. A journalist, in 1947 he co-purchased (with Gerard Piel) the failing Scientific American magazine and served as its editor for 37 years, retiring in 1984. During his tenure, the magazine's subscription base grew greatly and it acquired a reputation as one of the world's best magazines.
