Summary
Hearing. Worked at the Breslau, Germany, institute for the deaf. One of very few German teachers of the deaf to resist the then-predominant oral method in German deaf education. His book Der Taubstumme und seine Sprache (1889) argued that pure oralism was not workable, and that deaf education should use not only articulation and lipreading but also pantomime as necessary and a manual alphabet, which would be gradually phased out of the classroom as the pupils advanced through the grades. However, conventional sign language, as such, was still banned under Heidsiek's method.
