Born at Louisville, KY; deaf at 5 from scarlet fever. Kentucky School for the deaf, 1881 until graduation in 1890; graduated Gallaudet College in 1895. Took a teaching position at the school for the deaf at Devil's Lake, North Dakota, 1896-1898, then left for a similar position at the Kentucky School.
