Summary
Hearing. Was headmaster of the Deaf and Dumb Institution at Doncaster, England for 45 years. He put together a collection of almost every book ever published anywhere in the world, from 1547 up to the time of his death. Edward Miner Gallaudet (q.v.) scored a major coup when he was able to buy this collection after Baker's death. The Baker Collection formed the nucleus of the Gallaudet University Library's Deaf Collection, today the world's largest special collection of deaf-related books and other materials.
