Summary
Deafened at age 3 by measles; sent to the Iowa School for the deaf at age 10 for 7 years, then to the Nebraska School for the deaf for an additional 2 years. Went to Gallaudet College in 1880, but left during his freshman year. Tried farming for two years, then entered the printing trade. After working various places, opened his own printing office in 1893, and also published a semimonthly magazine for the deaf called the Indicator. Married Chloe W. Child in 1889.
