Summary
Born at Marshalltown, IA; deafened by cerebrospinal meningitis at age 12. Graduated the Iowa School for the deaf, 1884; B.A. (1889), M.A. (1895) and honorary LLD (1914) from Gallaudet College. Teacher and physical director 1889-1901? at the Wisconsin School for the deaf, and teacher 1901-1933 and principal 1908-1933 at the Iowa School; author of A Dictionary of the Sign Language, Out of the Silence, and The Sign Language: A Manual of Signs. Associate editor for several deaf newspapers. Married Ella F. Black (q.v.).
