Deaf at age 12; had to leave regular school at that time, but continued studies on his own until entering a school for the deaf at Llandaff at age 15. There, for 5 years, he apprenticed to become a teacher of the deaf. In 1886, called to a church mission to the deaf at Wolverhamption, becoming a missionary for over 30 years.
