Summary
Born near Finlay, OH; lost hearing gradually, probably from hereditary causes. Possibly brother of Jacob W.W. Powell (q.v.) Attended regular schools until age 11, when he entered the Ohio School for the deaf at Columbus, 1860-1871. Graduated Gallaudet College 1875, then went to work for the Finlay, OH county recorder's office as a clerk for 13 years. This was followed by 6 years as a clerk in the county auditor's office, after which he resigned and opened a title abstract office of his own. Married Catharine Ringer in 1876.
