Summary
Born at Stamford, CT; deafened at age 7 from "brain fever" supposedly caused by a fall onto his head. Entered the American School for the deaf at Hartford at age 9, graduating 1881 and transferring to the academic department of the New York School for the deaf, graduating there 1884. Initial plans to follow his father into shoe merchandising were changed for the field of printing, and he held almost every newspaper job in various Connecticut and New York papers. In 1888, started his own job printing business, sold out and returned to working for others until called to become instructor in printing at the Central New York School for the deaf, Rome. Returned to New York City and started a new job printing business of his own in 1895.
