Summary
Deafened at age 4 or 5 from scarlet fever and an accident. Attended Clarke School for the Deaf and Shortridge High School (Indianapolis); B.S. (1934) from Wabash College and Ph.D. (1938) in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University; worked as a statistician with Eli Lilly & Co., developing statistical procedures that improved quality control. First deaf president of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf; one of the founders and later executive director of Teletypewriters for the Deaf, Inc. Retired in 1978. Advocate of the oral method of deaf education.
