Summary
At age 7, lost his hearing and blinded in one eye by scarlet fever. Attended the Iowa School for the deaf, but left after 9 years due to poor health. Held various occupations, then in 1896 was appointed deputy county recorder. The following year, he became a policy writer for an insurance company.
