Summary
Born at Yorktown, NY; deafened at age 4 1/2 by scarlet fever. Home schooled until age 12, when he entered the New York Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, graduating 1848. Worked as a cabinet maker and on the family farm until appointed as a teacher in the New York school in 1850, then moved to the American School for the deaf in 1865.
