Summary
Born to deaf parents; gradually deafened beginning age 12, totally deaf at age 17, but remained oral all his life. Graduated Lake View High School; B.S. (1951) from Roosevelt University and M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. Worked as an accountant for Sears, Roebuck for 30 years, also studied law part-time at John Marshall University, finishing 1956 and eventually becoming a full-time lawyer. Very successful (he admitted to being a millionaire), and wrote extensively about legal affairs pertaining to deaf persons. Best known for his role in defending accused deaf murderer Donald Lang (q.v.), which was dramatized in a book by Ernest Tidyman, Dummy (1974), and a 1979 TV-movie based on the book. Married to a deaf woman, Sybil (who predeceased him in 1970) and had at least one deaf child, Lynda. Spent most of his life in the Chicago area, but moved to Rockville, MD to spend his last years with his daughter, dying there of a brain aneurysm.
