              Either born deaf or deafened at age 4 from sunstroke. Ages 7-15, attended the Edgbaston Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, then privately tutored by the headmaster of the Old Trafford Schools for the Deaf. Became a resident teacher at the Old Trafford Schools and, in his spare time, a lay helper at the Grosvenor Street Institute for the Deaf, Manchester. Left Manchester to become missionary to the deaf at Oxford, but left that post after one year. An expert chess player who several times defeated hearing regional and national champion, he was chess editor of The British Deaf-Mute Times for many years. Died after a seven-week illness.
