Summary
Hard of hearing. Born and raised at Old Warden Park; educated at Eton College, then joined a regiment of the Royal Army as an officer. As the son of a wealthy manufacturer, he had the money and leisure to indulge in motor sports and collecting vintage automobiles. Inheriting ยท2,000,000 in 1932, he bought the first of his collection of vintage airplanes. Partially deafened by a motor racing accident in 1936. Joining the Royal Air Force in 1940 despite his hearing impairment, he crashed and was killed on a military night mission. In 1944, his mother used his estate to found the now-famous Shuttleworth Trust in his memory, for the purpose of collecting, preserving, operating and display of antique automobiles and airplanes at Old Warden; the Shuttleworth Collection has grown greatly and continues to be active today.
