Summary
Deaf at 13; continued in regular schools until 16, then 4 years in the Mississippi school for the deaf and at Gallaudet College. Started a day school for the deaf in New Orleans, but returned to Mississippi and tried "merchandising", but quit after losing too much money on it. Returned to his ancestral cotton plantation to become a "planter". Was instrumental in pressing for the admittance of women students to Gallaudet College. In 1902, suffered "brain and nerve disease" from an attack by a "gang of villains" whom he had exposed.
