Hearing. Born to deaf parents in Omaha, NE; graduated public schools in Flagstaff, AZ. B.A. (1963) from Arizona State University, M.S.E. (1966) and Ph.D. (1971) degrees from the University of Arizona, and a 1969 M.A. from California State University, Northridge. Worked as a counselor and teacher at the Arizona School for the Deaf, then became Associate Dean of Student Life at Gallaudet College. In 1975, was appointed superintendent at the California School for the Deaf, Berkeley. Oversaw the school's relocation to a new campus in Fremont beginning in 1980.
