Summary
Hearing. As a Congressman, was very interested in Gallaudet College and its progress, frequently visiting the campus, and helped resist other Congressmen who wanted to abolish the College. His interest continued after his election to the U.S. Presidency in 1880, and he continued to visit the Gallaudet campus. His last public appearance prior to his assassination was at Gallaudet College. Funds were raised for a memorial bust by Daniel Chester French, which has been on display in the University's Chapel Hall for over 115 years.
