Born hard of hearing at Kipling, SK. Attended public schools without special help, graduating Marian High School in Regina in 1966. Graduated the University of Regina in 1970 and later earned two master's degrees there (arts, 1983, and education, 1990). In 2001, was working on a doctorate from the University of British Columbia.
