Born deaf and grew up in Sweden; first name originally spelled Jerker, but changed when he became an American. Graduated the Manilla school for the deaf in Stockholm; Gallaudet College B.A., 1960; Columbia Univ. M.A., 1962, Ph.D. 1981. Teacher of sociology at Gallaudet College/University, 1964 to retirement in 1996. Active in Swedish, American, and international organizations of the deaf; president of the World Federation of the Deaf, 1983-1995. Married Nancy Timko.
