Born deaf at Victoria, BC; mainstreamed into public schools; graduated the University of Victoria (BA, 1996). A year later, earned a travel counselling certificate and wrote travel columns for deaf newspapers and ran her own deaf-oriented travel agency for a year. In 2002, was working as a workshop planner for a deaf social service agency. Became one of the first deaf competition rowers in 2000, competing against both hearing and deaf rowers.
