Born at Easton, PA; went to the Catholic School for the Deaf in Hannibal, MO until its closure, then transferred to the Maria Consilia School for the Deaf at St. Louis, MO, for 5 years. Then to the St. Francis Catholic School for the Deaf near Milwaukee, WI, where he began his woodworking career even before finishing school. 7 years later, appointed foreman of the school's woodcarving department; later, recruited to work for a major woodcarving factory in La Crosse, WI.
