Summary
Born at Ridgeway, SC; deaf at age 11 (1864) from meningitis. Public schools and home schooling were followed by short periods at the South Carolina Institution for the deaf, then to Gallaudet College where he graduated in 1882. Founded the Florida School for the Deaf; afterwards, taught at the Oregon and South Carolina Schools. Married Georgie Decker in 1892.
