Born in Geneseo, Illinois; deafened at age 6; bachelor's degree in 1891 from Knox College, honorary Litt.D. from Knox in 1921. Co-founder and co-head of Calkins and Holden Agency, New York City, said to be the first modern advertising agency; died in New York City.
