Summary
Born at Edinburgh; gradual deafness beginning at age 7 after an attack of scarlet fever. Attended the Edinburgh Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, then went to work in his family's silk merchandising business. One of the major founders of what is now the Edinburgh Deaf Centre. Used his personal wealth for the benefit of Edinburgh deaf people, particularly those in poverty.
