Summary
Born near Northfield, IA; deaf at 2 from scarlet fever. Was sent to the Ohio School for the deaf at age 9 for 4 years, then her parents took her out of school. Wanting to continue her schooling after a break of a few years, went to a private school at Iowa City for 2 years. Appointed a teacher at that school for 1 year, then resumed her studies there. They were interrupted again for 3 years; she finally returned in 1863 to teach for 3 years, leaving the profession 1 year after her marriage to Conrad Zorbaugh.
