Born at Gladewater, TX; deafened at age 8 by complications of pneumonia; B.S. (1957) from Gallaudet College, M.A. from University of Missouri, Ed.D. (1970) from University of Arizona, Tucson. First deaf person to earn a doctorate in rehabilitation psychology; held positions at several schools and agencies, including the Deafness Research and Training Center at New York University, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and Gallaudet University; died at Washington, DC of a heart attack.
