Summary
Born at Norfolk, VA; deafness (from maternal rubella) discovered at age 18 months but not confirmed until nearly 3 years old. Began with the oral John Tracy Clinic correspondence course, then sent to the Clarke School for the Deaf from ages 5 to 12. Transferred to a small private school back in Norfolk, then at age 16 attended Norfolk Collegiate School until high school graduation. Attended Virginia Tech, graduating with a B.S. in landscape horticulture. Went to work for a Norfolk landscaping company. Began to discover and accept deaf culture after the 1988 Gallaudet University DPN revolution and a Clarke School reunion. Married a hearing man.
