Summary
Subject of a U.S. Supreme Court case, in which her family appealed their public school district's refusal to provide a sign language interpreter for their deaf daughter. They were represented by deaf lawyer Michael Chatoff (q.v.). In a precedent-setting decision, the Court ruled against the Rowleys, saying that interpreters were not required if the deaf child was doing "good enough" without one. In the Court's eyes, quality of education was not a right; only basic access to education was required.
