Summary
Born at Milwaukee in the Wisconsin Territory; graduated the Wisconsin State School for the deaf in 1854; attended Gallaudet College but had to leave after 3 years to help support his widowed mother and family. Became a clerk in the office of the register of deeds in Milwaukee County. He then taught at the Wisconsin School until 1871 and dabbled in various occupations before settling upon pattern making from 1879 on.
