Summary
Born at Mattoon, IL; deafened by meningitis at age 8. Privately tutored for a while, then attended the Illinois School for the deaf, graduating in 1880. Taught in a St. Louis day school (the Gallaudet School?) in St. Louis for 2 years, then moved to Berlin Heights, IL, from which she gve classes in drawing, painting, and design in five towns. Called to teach at the Western Pennsylvania Institution for the deaf, 1885-1890, then to another position in the Ontario Institution for the Deaf (Belleville), teaching art there for many years until retirement in 1929. Married James C. Balis.
