Summary
Born deaf at Knowle, Devon; also had a deaf sister, Alice. Apparently private tutored, then at age 16 in 1758 won a scholarship from the Society of Arts and studied art in London. Became a well-known and prolific miniaturist, described as one of the "great eighteenth-century miniaturists"; did a painting of King George III, which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Retired from painting in 1798 and died at Knowle.
