Born in Monroe County, KY; deaf at 2 from meningitis. Entered the Kentucky School for the deaf at age 8, graduating at 20. Took a position with the Glasgow (KY) Herald, then left for a foreman position at the Glasgow Republican until 1899. Left to accept a position as business manager and part owner of a steam laundry business; also manufactured rubber stamps on the side. Married Celia Moack in 1895.
