Summary
Born deaf, severely underweight, and with a heart murmur, all from maternal rubella, at Arcola, SK; heart surgically corrected, but she continued to be sickly throughout childhood. Saskatchewan School for the Deaf, then moved to a mainstreamed public school program at age 15, without the benefit of interpreters. She switched to a Catholic high school and eventually graduated. Worked in various jobs in deaf social service agencies and schools until entering Carleton University in 1989, earning a BA (1994) and MA (1997), both in anthropology, from there.
