Born deaf, possibly from maternal rubella; deafness not recognized until age 3; attended regular public schools, except for a couple of years at the Detroit Day School for the Deaf, graduating Brighton High School in 1973; also partially taught by her father, himself a teacher of the deaf. Played the role of Helen Keller in the school play. Worked for a power company in Salt Lake City, initially as a clerk-typist and then rising to customer accountant.
