Summary
Born near Smithfield, OH; scarlet fever left him deaf at age 2. Ohio School for the deaf, 1852-1859. Relocated to Illinois for about 9 years, then moved to Iowa in 1868, where he acquired a 161-acre farm. Health problems later forced him to rent out the farm and move into town, living with his sister.
