Summary
Born at Batavia, IL; deafened at age 15 by flu and chicken pox; graduated from the Alabama School for the deaf. B.A. from Gallaudet College, 1926; M.Ed. From University of Chicago, 1939; honorary D.LL. From Gallaudet, 1955. Married Caroline Hyman in 1949. Taught for 8 years at the South Dakota School for the Deaf, 6 years at the Minnesota School for the Deaf, 28 years at the California School for the Deaf/Berkeley until retirement in 1969. Active in the National Association of the Deaf, and served as its 14th President for 18 years, the longest term ever by any NAD president; resident of Concert, CA. Died in his sleep at Martinez, CA after a brief illness.
