Summary
Born hard of hearing in Memphis, TN, and slowly further deafened; started in regular schools, then graduated from the Illinois School for the Deaf and from Gallaudet College (1903). Taught at the Wisconsin, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Virginia Schools for the deaf, becoming principal of the latter. Wrote several language-education books for deaf students, including Straight Language for the Deaf. Invented the "Fitzgerald Key", a simplified method of teaching English sentence structure to deaf children. Died at Oak Park, IL.
