Summary
Born at Oakley, Fifeshire, Scotland; family emigrated to Pennsylvania when he was 4. Between 5 and 6, deafened by scarlet fever. Attended the Ohio School for the deaf, then Gallaudet College 1864-1870, graduating with a B.A. Taught at the Ohio School 1870-1890, then became its principal 1890 onward. Instrumental, with Robert P. MacGregor and others, in the founding of the Ohio Home for Aged and Infirm Deaf (now Columbus Colony).
