Summary
First deaf Canadian woman to become a nun. Born at Kingston, Ontario; deaf at 5 from typhoid fever; went to the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb 1852-1854, then was placed in a boarding school run by the Daughters of Charity, Servants of the Poor, in Longue-Pointe, Quebec. She subsequently entered that religious order as a novice in 1858, taking her vows in 1860 under the name of Sister Marguerite du Sacre-Coeur while on her deathbed from tuberculosis, dying 5 weeks later.
