Summary
Deaf at age 8; attended the Virginia Institution for the deaf for almost 7 years before leaving early to accept a printer position in a newspaper office. President of the Virginia Association of the Deaf from 1895 on. Married Mary Sclater in 1891. Instrumental in the 1909 founding of the Virginia School for Colored Deaf and Blind Children in Hampton/Newport News, VA. His deaf wife was the school's first teacher.
