Summary
Born into a German-speaking Indiana community, deafened at age 8. Switched from German-speaking public schools to the Indiana School for the deaf to complete his education, learning the trade of shoemaker. Worked as a shoemaker several years, including a successful shop of his own, before being offered the position of instructor of shoemaking at the Indiana School from 1891 on.
