Summary
Born at Oriskany, NY; deafened at 17 by meningitis in 1867. Wisconsin School for the deaf 1869-1870, then Gallaudet College 1870-1875 (B.A.). Private secretary to President Edward Miner Gallaudet for 2 years, then an instructor in the Maryland School for Colored Deaf and Blind Children at Baltimore, then tutored among the Xaverian Brothers of Baltimore. 1880 onward, taught at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, at that time located in Turtle Creek near Pittsburgh, PA. Married Sylvia Chapin.
