Summary
Born deaf near Sarnia, ON, and attended the Ontario Institution for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb 1871-1880, then was appointed assistant teacher there. In 1882, she married the school principal, a hearing man named Duncan W. McDermid. When he became superintendent, Mary Ettie became the school's art teacher for 16 years, the first deaf teacher in the province of Manitoba, until 1906.
