Deafened at age 7; entered the Illinois School at age 14. Studies at Gallaudet College were interrupted for 2 years due to illness. B.A., 1886, and honorary Doctorate of Divinity, 1914, from Gallaudet. Priest in the Episcopal Church; principal of the St. Louis Day School for the Deaf, 1890-1922; president of the National Association of the Deaf 1917-1923. Married Lulu Olga Herdman; died in St. Louis.
