Born at Cramond near Edinburgh; deafened at an early age by scarlet fever; attended the Braidwood school in Edinburgh. Held various government accounting positions, culminating in Auditor of Excise of Scotland, 1804-1832. Wrote or edited four books; is buried in St. Cuthbert's Parish Churchyard, Edinburgh.
