Born deaf at Moutiers of Italian descent (baptized as Emmanuele Filiberto Armedee de Carignano); a student of Manuel Ramirez de Carrion at Madrid; succeeded his father as 2nd Prince of Carignan; in 1698, became a French citizen. Commissioned the Palazzo Carignano in Italy (begun 1679).
