Born deaf at Greenwich, RI; from ages 21 to 28, was a student at the newly-founded American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb. Teacher at the Pennsylvania School, 1824-30; due to ill health, returned to Newport, RI, where he worked as a carpenter.
