Summary
Graduated the California School for the Deaf, Berkeley, then Gallaudet College (1943).As a Gallaudet student, acted in a student performance of Arsenic and Old Lace; was invited to repeat the role on the original Broadway stage. During World War II, received a draft notice by error, and almost made it through military induction before his deafness was discovered. Became a long-time teacher, especially of science and of drama, beginning with the Michigan School for the deaf and eventually ending with the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, where the auditorium was renamed Theatre Malz in his honor in 1995. Received an honrary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Gallaudet University upon retirement in 1993. Married Mary Claveau.
