Summary
Born in Glasgow to the Sheriff of Glasgow; deafened at an early age; attended a regular day school, then was a day student at the Glasgow Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. Apprenticed to the wood engraving trade but did not like it, eventually learning the painter's trade. Moving to London, became involved in deaf organizations both there and in Glasgow. Editor and publisher for some time of the Deaf and Dumb Magazine. Co-founder of the short-lived National Deaf and Dumb Society. In poor health for the last year of his life, he died from an illness.
